H-4 dependent spouses – As of May 26, 2015, some spouses of H-1B workers in the U.S. can apply for EADs – Employment Authorization Documents or work permits. There are strict requirements (of course)! Your spouse must be on her/his way to getting a green card through an approved I-140 petition or has been approved under AC21 to work and remain in the U.S. beyond the six-year H-1B time limit. Up to now, spouses of H-1B workers haven’t been allowed to work, which creates boredom, financial issues, and stress. This change opens up a whole new world to these families of highly-skilled workers who America wants to retain. USCIS has posted FAQs at http://1.usa.gov/1ILHV0V
