DAPA and Expanded DACA – Under DAPA, undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and green card holders could apply for relief from deportation for 3 years, as well as work permits. These new programs (which do not grant green cards or lead to citizenship) continue to be on hold following recent court decisions. President Obama announced numerous executive actions on immigration in November 2014, since Congress has failed to pass immigration reform. Under expanded DACA, relief from deportation would last 3 years instead of the original 2 announced in 2012, and more people would be eligible to apply. Over 4 million people were expected to be eligible for temporary relief under these programs. More appeals will follow, probably to the full appeals court and to the Supreme Court, and the substantive case is expected to be decided by the Supreme Court at some point; that could be June 2016. The original DACA program continues, and is accepting new and renewal applications. For more details on DACA, go to http://1.usa.gov/1i64USU and for DAPA go to http://1.usa.gov/1chocYt
