It was an honor to help refugees in Oregon apply for their green cards on March 11. Refugees are required to apply for green cards after they’ve been in the U.S. one year. The event was organized by a number of non-profits including the American Immigration Lawyers Association of Oregon, Catholic Charities, SOAR, Lutheran Family Service, and IRCO (google all these great organizations to find out more). Scores of volunteers helped – attorneys, law students, volunteers, doctors, donors, and law enforcement officers. Another attorney and I assisted an Iraqi family of four fill in their forms. We didn’t ask and they didn’t tell us their story, but it was by definition one of fear and persecution. I’m not a tee shirt fan but I really like the one we wore: “We’re All From Somewhere.” Glad to be part of this inspiring event; I’ll wear my tee again!
